okay, so after graduating, i want to open my own salon, problem is i dont know what all i need to learn. do i need to go to college for business? and if so what would be a good school to go to, while doing cosmetology? plus, im trying to get into an amazing cosmetology school [Aveda] which is going to be a little pricy, so i really cant afford 2 expensive schools… to be honest, i just need information from anyone who may know something about opening a business. =]

Hair loss can be seen because of many different reasons such as stress, poor hair care, poor nutrition and genetically.

Also hair loss is very common problem among people and do not worry if you loose from 50 to 100 hair strands per day, it is normal and in limits but abnormal loosing of hair can be a sign of health problems.

I advice you to read the article about hair loss from the source to get more information and tips about hair loss problems.

If it is really strong smells I would wait till your out of the first trimester to play it on the very safe side, however many, many women (myself included) haven’t given up having good looking hair in pregnancy. There is no proof that it is harmful it is just “thought” to be. But if you know much about science and the human body and the placenta and you put it all together you know the odds are so slim that it is ALMOST not worth even mentioning. There has been no births that have had birth defects or mental defects linked to hair dyes, so it really is up to you. I have had 3 very healthy kids and I am 18.6 weeks pregnant with our 4th and still coloring. It is just a personal choice of what you would rather do. If it was a high risk thing there wouldn’t be so many questions of “should I?” we all would just know it is dangerous, like drinking or smoking, but since it is a warning of assumption it isn’t to concerning to some but to others it is!

Call Customer Service @ a Aveda salons nearest you or go to YELP or Craigslist and read reviews or post on their message boards there from your city.

Playing with chemicals is not like playing with clothes, or doing a manicure, there are penalties for playing chemicals in the lab. Even hair color experts at the salon are not rocket scientists, they do a bang up dye jobs to their clients or their own hair.
Example: “My hair is right about armpit length as it is, but I’ve severely damaged it by bleaching it all at once. As a student of cosmetology myself, I would have to say that it was probably one of the worst mistakes I could have ever made.”
Another example: ok i did my hair yesterday i DIDN’T bleach it ,but im not sure what its called but she took the color out of my hair and then dies it a blond color and my head was on fire it killed me so after that i hated my hair color so i colored it my self a darker color, it looked so ugly and it burned me again it rully hrt so after i washed it my mom checked it for me and found small spots of blood all over my top scalp like over 20 of em now im scared and don’t know why its there is it from the color am i sick and something is wrong ??

Chemicals can enter the body through the skin.

Google: Teen ‘feared she would die’ after reaction to hair dye
The allergic reaction was caused by a well-known brand of semi-permanent hair dye Chloe used to turn her hair black for a Hallowe’en party. . . . . called for beauty bosses to ban hair dye chemical PPD (para-phenylenediamine) from the shelves. 11-04-11

The chemical is not new and is present in a number of brands of dark hair colours, acting to help adhere the dye to the hair so that it doesn’t wash out. It’s made from coal tar and is used in both permanent and semi-permanent hair colours. It’s well-known to be a cause of serious allergic reactions – including something called contact dermatitis which can lead to rashes, blisters, and open sores.
PPD is sometimes added to black henna tattoos and that using them is not safe. Allergic reactions usually begin within two to 10 days following application. One bad reaction can lead to sensitivities to other products such as hair dye, sunblock and some types of clothing dyes. Oftentimes, it’s using the product a second or third time.

Google: A 38-year old mother left in a coma after using hair dye. 11-22-11. SHE DYED HER HAIR MANY TIMES BEFORE, USING THE SAME BRAND.

Permanent black hair dye is linked to causing leukemia and lymphomas.

Google Salon Hair Dye Lawsuits. About 336,000 results (0.17 seconds) Dec. 2011
When it comes to hair care treatments, product use or visits to a salon or spa, the consumer must take responsibility to do their homework and be aware of all the risks involved.
Vanessa Minnillo Lachey: “I dated a guy once who wanted me to have blonde hair. Clearly, he was the wrong guy for me! I went to a lady who bleached my hair and it literally fell out. So, not only did I go back to my natural hair, I broke up with the guy!”

One example: MY HAIR DRESSER DYED MY HAIR GREY. I’ve been crying for the last 2 hours, I want to kill that bish for destroying what was amazing bleach blonde hair. AND to make things worse, she cut my extensions WAY too short.

“23 years old Rihanna is well known for changing her hairstyle and hair colour on a regular basis and it looks as though all those treatments have finally begun to take their toll on her mane and perhaps her common sense.” US Showbiz 2-18-12 Rihanna has reportedly paid $23,500 for an emergency haircut after hers was ruined in a sauna, to fly out hair stylist from L.A. to London..The Province 3-1-12.
A WOMAN was temporarily blinded when her face swelled up “like a football” following what she told was a severe reaction to hair dye.
Carmen Rowe, 25, from Swansea was hospitalised for three days after using the Clairol ‘Nice n’ Easy’ natural black colour. She said: “I lost my job, all for the sake of a glamorous hairstyle. I just want to warn parents what could happen.” She claimed she carried out a skin test 48 hours before using the dye without a problem and has been colouring her hair since she was 13.
great lengths vs socap?! ((EXTENSIONS))?

I am a stylist considering getting certified in either SoCap or Great Lengths hair extension application..

I heard SoCap is more durable than Great Lengths, But I also know Great Lengths hair is of the highest quality.

The cost of certification is not an issue, as I plan on getting the equipment as well, so it’s going to range 2-3k reguardless..

it kind of stresses me out knowing that great lenghts will terminate your certification if you don’t order $X amount of hair in X amount of months… also where i work there is also only 1 stylist in the whole company (of 6 salons) that is certified, so I’m not sure how high the demand would be… I know she’s kept busy for sure.. but I just have no idea what would be better for me to get on my own.

If I end up going to a different salon in the future… I just want the best hair/equipment needed to assure clients quality hair and durable bonds, to keep them coming back.

anyone have any pros/cons of either??
** as for socap being more socap being more durable, I have heard friends who had GL extensions say they fall out pretty easily, and have also read the same kind of reviews online.

but that MIGHT just be fault of the stylist who applied them.

A new Sims 2 expansion. What do you think?

January 4, 2006 – While we’d already collected plenty of evidence on the third expansion to The Sims 2, today Electronic Arts gave us a tap with the Wand of Officialdom: The Sims 2 Open for Business is indeed the next add-on for the popular sequel.

Open for Business lets you run your own business enterprise — as conventional or outlandish as you wish. You’re in charge of opening shops, hiring employees, managing your staff, keeping customers happy, and selling any number of goods — from toys to floral bouquets to robots. You’ll help your sims respond to each customer, dropping prices or even using “wacky outfits” to woo a cranky patron.

The expansion will offer more than 125 new items to support your Sim-business, including display cases, a beauty salon chair, a toy workbench, a floral station, and cash registers. Slick equipment will help, but you’ll still need good business sense — from training to promoting, from hiring to firing — to bring in profits and grow your op

The Sims 2 is my favorite game, and as with the original series I am always excited when an expansion pack is released. I have yet to be disappointed; not only do they always come with 100+ new objects, but they expand the actual gameplay. I am especially looking forward to OFB, as it sounds like it will essentially add a tycoon-game aspect into the already delightfully fun world of the Sims.

With all the “investigations” and blame.. why is there no news about Diane Feinstein resigning her position?

SEN. Dianne Feinstein has resigned from the Military Construction Appropriations subcommittee.

As MILCON leader, Feinstein relished the details of military construction, even micromanaging one project at the level of its sewer design. She regularly took junkets to military bases around the world to inspect construction projects, some of which were contracted to her husband’s companies, Perini Corp. and URS Corp.

The MILCON subcommittee is not only in charge of supervising military construction, it also oversees “quality of life” issues for veterans, which includes building housing for military families and operating hospitals and clinics for wounded soldiers. Perhaps Feinstein is trying to disassociate herself from MILCON’s incredible failure to provide decent medical care for wounded soldiers.

Two years ago, before the Washington Post became belatedly involved, the online magazine Salon.com exposed the horrors of deficient medical care for Iraq war veterans. While leading While leading MILCON, Feinstein had ample warning of the medical-care meltdown. But she was not proactive on veteran’s affairs.

Feinstein abandoned MILCON as her ethical problems were surfacing in the media, and as it was becoming clear that her subcommittee left grievously wounded veterans to rot while her family was profiting from the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. It turns out that Blum also holds large investments in companies that were selling medical equipment and supplies and real estate leases—often without the benefit of competitive bidding—to the Department of Veterans Affairs, even as the system of medical care for veterans collapsed on his wife’s watch.

As of December 2006, according to SEC filings and www.fedspending.org, three corporations in which Blum’s financial entities own a total of $1 billion in stock won considerable favor from the budgets of the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs:

Boston Scientific Corporation: $17.8 million for medical equipment and supplies; 85 percent of contracts awarded without benefit of competition.

Kinetic Concepts Inc.: $12 million, medical equipment and supplies; 28 percent noncompetitively awarded.

CB Richard Ellis: The Blum-controlled international real estate firm holds congressionally funded contracts to lease office space to the Department of Veterans Affairs. It also is involved in redeveloping military bases turned over to the private sector.

You would think that, considering all the money Feinstein’s family has pocketed by waging global warfare while ignoring the plight of wounded American soldiers, she would show a smidgeon of shame and resign from the entire Senate, not just a subcommittee. Conversely, you’d think she might stick around MILCON to try and fix the medical-care disaster she helped to engineer for the vets who were suckered into fighting her and Bush’s panoply of unjust wars

They had really expensive and bad experiences from Fabiola, Widaat and from freelance artists who lie about knowing make up. Please suggest the best make up for bridal in Dubai!!

My best suggestion is Mushkbar Beauty Salon in Dubai.

I guarantee that Mushkbar is decent, reasonable, high quality. I have lived in Dubai for over 16 years now. My sister, sisters in laws, cousins, close friends and almost every girl in my family has gone to Mushkbar and continues to go to Mushkbar. She is the most amazing, warm hearted and beautiful make up artist inside and out.

Price wise, Mushkbar is so reasonable ! Even girls who have their weddings in restaurants instead of hotels can afford Mushkbar beauty salon and the quality of make up they receive is a very high standard. Even the hairstyle and mehndi.

Mushkbar made the henna designs popular in Dubai, and I won’t talk about any other salon in it’s comparison to not degrade them but as far as freelance artists are concerned. Don’t go to freelance artists! They lie about knowing the work and know practically nothing!!!!

Also, since Mushkbar is so popular and the salon has its own name, many freelance artists are frauds and lie about being from Mushkbar. There are many beauticians and hairstylists who received their training from Mushkbar such as Khalida, Samina, Mahira, Wafa, etc. But they are too expensive personally. Plus they are okay at their work, not too talented and they are not decent.

Mushkbar the main person at the salon is a very decent, very sweet and amazingly talented beautician!!! The number to contact Mushkbar is (04) 3367067 or (04) 3344466

Like her facebook page and check out a few albums on it http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mushkbar-Beauty-Salon/348936815099

Personally I’m not to keen on grandeur because it means size. Maybe a slogan like ‘The size of your dreams doesnt matter’ or ‘Where dreams begin’. I went back to the artist (a new guy..a different tattoo shop.. both were recommended) and he said that the color would return but that I would have to come back in 8 weeks for touch up. This is MORE than a touch up! I decided to get a second opinion.
admin answers:

You can go on-line and look for photos of all kinds of dogs and print them off and frame them to hang up on the walls. Make sure you find photos you can and are allowed to print. If there is a name of artist and animal with each picture, include it with the photo. You can usually find frames at used store like thrift shops and good will that shouldn’t cost too much. Or you could paint a Murial on the wall showing a dog or dogs getting bathed and groomed or anything you think would fit depending on the wall size.
I think it is great that you don’t charge outrageous prices. Also you said something about tips. I would suggest just setting a jar that is marked Tips on the counter, and if someone wants to leave a tip, they can. Have fun with what ever you decide to do grooming salon. I’m sure what ever you do, it will look and be great. Good Luck!

Color to add thickness to hair?

Help! I have REALLY thin, fine hair. I hate it. I have finally accepted that I can’t wear it long and now wear it just above my shoulders, with some layers and use mouse to try to thicken it.

For years, I’ve been having it highlighted with a high-lift color from an Aveda salon. I was told that the color would coat my hair and actually make it feel a little thicker. Since Nov, my hairdresser has been using bleach, I believe. This has made the highlights more vibrant, and I like the look of the color, but it feels like it’s thinner than ever! I’m wondering if using the bleach is damaging it and making it thinner? Would switching back to a high-lift color be better? (Can I even DO this now, over the bleached hair?)

Aveda is a good school. Have you looked into Paul Mitchell? Also excellent. Unfortunately, the price of the school is directly related to the quality of haircut instruction you will receive. I do not think you need to go to business school however. There are other choices you can make to fill in your knowledge gap. First, the SBA (Small Business Administration) offers classes … I think they are free or extremely nominal fee, that will teach you how to apply for loans (goes into putting together a business plan etc.) other business obligations such as what type of entity are you and what do you need to file, etc. The second option is don’t open your own shop right away if you are asking this question. Learn your business at someone else’s business. Rent a chair at another business and figure out the overhead, what services are covered under your fee, etc. When you open your own salon, you will need to know how to price your booths if you plan on renting spare chairs out or is this a one person shop. And then there’s the books, payroll & sales & use tax and licensing. The good thing is that if you leave and you’ve built up a good clientele, they will follow you whever you go to next. The third option is to go head first and open a shop. It’s expensive (My niece put $100k into hers and she doesn’t even own the building) and after 3 years, it is just starting to show a profit. Now, my niece is fortunate because my sis is in the same line of business and if not for her experience and advice, my niece would have gone out of business 2 years ago.) . Can you sell? You gotta sell your business and if you can’t think of innovative marketing ideas, your salon will just be another place in the shopping center. other option, if your zoning allows, have the shop in your home.

Looking for a young, hip, fast paced, cutting edge salon in N. San Diego County?

I am a salon coordinator. But I have realized I am working in quite possibly the worst salon in the history of salons. There are problems in every aspect of the salon, from the management to the stylists to the clients. So I am set on finding a new salon to call home.

The ideal salon for me would be a young, hip, cutting edge, fast paced salon. One where you can learn something new everyday and always see the latest most fashion forward hairstyles.

I’d like some input as to salons the Y! community feels fit the description.

(just a little FYI, I prefer Aveda and B&B products)

Is it rude to switch hairdressers who work in the same salon?

So I had this hairdresser who did my hair three times, I really liked her. Then I went to go make my fourth appointment with her, but she was unavailable and I had to wait like a month if I wanted her. So then I told the receptionist just to put me with another hairdresser because I couldn’t wait that long.

Then a couple of months later to make my fifth appointment, I asked for the second hairdresser because she did my hair last and I liked her as well. But that time, my original hairdresser was working and she didn’t say anything to me. I feel really bad…..is it rude to switch hairdressers who work in the same salon? I don’t want to switch salons either because they’re the only ones who use Aveda products which I really like.
You owe it to yourself to go to the stylist who did the BEST job on your hair. It is your hard-earned money you are spending and you deserve to get the most for it.

It is not like you had a long-standing relationship with the first stylist, I am sure this is not the only time this has or will happen in their career. It was rude of the first stylist not to even speak to you, unprofessional too. Go to the stylist you like best with a clear conscience. If the first stylist is too rude to even speak to you because you went to another sylist, she does not deserve your business and you made the right choice.

Do you think a Hair Salon can charge $50 for a Free treatment?

I rang up a HairDresser to use a free ‘Aveda Hair Therapy’ treatment voucher from Cosmo magazine. (There were only 2 salons in my city to choose from). I mentioned I wanted to use the free voucher – at no time did the girl say there would be a charge for it.

So once I was sitting on the chair about to have the treatment at the salon, the hairdresser says “Ok you can either choose to pay $50 to have your hair blow-dried or $25 for towel-dried” (As they wash your hair before the treatment). I was a little shocked that they wanted to charge anything, as they knew I had a free voucher (and said nothing about the charge over the phone).

I said I’d have to have it blow-dried (as I had a job interview straight after) – but wasn’t too happy about paying $50 for a free treatment.

Anyway, my question is do you think it was wrong for the Hairdresser to charge $50 for a blow-dry? Also is $50 the correct charge for a blow-dry and should they have mentioned this charge to me over the phone when I made the appointment?

I can see both sides.

what to do with porous hair and roots with a foil job?

I have been told that I have very porous hair. It was dyed very blonde and now is having a hard time holding on to darker color. I have been using color conserving shampoo from Aveda and leave in conditioners, but is there anything else I can do?

Also, this was the first time I got a foil job instead of all over color. My hair was at a 10 level and they used bleach highlights with level 7 lowlights on foils. There is a hard line where my roots were though. It has only been a week since my coloring and there was a pretty defined line when I left the salon (my roots are just under an inch long right now, medium brown).
I guess the only limitations in can think of come in the sense of cost.. where it might be more expensive to buy cleaning products, gloves, the equipment needed for sterilization. But its more advisable to follow procedures as many others issues would arise from some one not following those methods.
Yes, the waxers do have to handle your equipment, but if a guy is having a brazilian wax, I’m sure that isn’t a big deal to him! The erection part sounds a bit silly to me. I can’t imagine a guy would have so much hair that it goes far enough up the shaft to require an erection to wax it!
i just use tape. i know that sounds trashy and redneck but hey it works. if ur nails r square so that the tips r flat then just put the tape on the base of ur finger nail and paint ovr the tape (make sure wen u put the tape on to leave howevr much space u need to paint the tips to make the french manicure) onto the tips. and if ur nails r curved (like most ppls) u cut the end of the tape to match ur finger nail shape and then stick it on. then once uve done all ur nails just remove the tape and volia! *** sorry if this doesnt make any bit of sense haha i tried ***

No, it is not acceptable to tip there, just as you wouldn’t have tipped any instructor in school. The stylists are paying a lot to be there, and the instructors are being paid by the school. Any good instructor would never stoop to accepting gratuities as a matter of dignity. But it’s nice of you to want to do so.

If you really want to help, then find out where your favorite stylists will be working when they graduate and continue to patronize them.
