About Michael Colosi – My Story
I was born in Rochester NY in 1960, I have 3 brothers and 1 sister. I am the youngest boy.
I went through high school with the ambition of graduating with the distinction of never having brought a book home from school. I succeeded in my quest; you can only imagine what my grades were. I’ve spent my adult life concealing my efforts from my children.
Then off to college, as you can imagine I didn’t have a lot of choices, in fact, only one, MCC, a community college that had to accept everyone…even me. Well that wasn’t much better than high school. I was going nowhere fast.
So that put me at about 20, then one day, My father had asked me what my intentions were for the future, and that I should consider going to cosmetology school. And one day work for him. I had nothing else going on; so I said OK, sign me up.
I finally found something I was decent at and could make money doing, and I enjoyed the challenge of doing and learning all about hair.
I started out working for my father, he was such a great person, I learned how to manage people from my dad, and everyone loved him.
Oh yeah, in the mean time I was married and we started to crank out kids like crazy…5 in all.
After 5 years of working for him it was apparent that I was doing all the work of a salon owner but getting paid like a stylist. I went to my dad and told him so…1 month later he sold the salon to me. Boy I had no clue what I was getting into.
At first things were going well, paying bills on time, not sweating payroll. But then as my family grew my income did not, we were getting stagnant.
The next 19 years were a constant struggle, worrying about business and about my family. I would be at family functions and everyone was having a great time and I would be sitting there worrying about if I had enough money in the bank to cover my payroll.
I was getting to the end of my rope; thinking about how I was going to tell my dad that the business he started in 1960 was going to close. I felt ashamed.
My big breakthrough came on a Monday afternoon a couple of years ago.
I was at a hair show and it hit me like a ton of bricks, I thought to myself, why have I been trying to service my clients based on what I thought they needed instead of what they wanted.
Why not give them what they want rather than what I thought they needed.
I called one of my brothers, his name is Mark, and told him of my revelation.
Mark made his millions as a marketing genius; I couldn’t wait to hear what he had to say about my revelation. He thought it was a good solid idea, and he suggested we put a marketing plan in place to support my idea.
Well, my results were earth shattering.
Business got good right away; I no longer worried about business or how I was going to take care of my family, what a relief.
After it was obvious that I had the right formula for a successful salon, I was all set to open more salons.
That’s when Mark grabbed me and said what you really should do is share your success with other salon owners who might be in the same situation you were in, a couple of years ago.
That’s why I’m on a mission to help salon owners find the dream salon that they deserve.
